Home Economics and 21st Century Learning

What is the role of a Home Economist?

Home economists teach, inform and advise government, industry and the community in order to assist individuals to make better lifestyle choices, (The Good Universities Guide, 2022).

Home Economics Disciplines

According to the Good Universities Guide (2022) there are three specialisations for home economists.

* Community Health * Teacher * Consumer Scientist *

Duties & Tasks of a Home Economist

Home economists may perform the following tasks:

  • Educate the community about aspects of everyday living, such as family, interpersonal relationships, food, nutrition and leading a balanced lifestyle
  • Teach independent living skills to school students and disabled or disadvantaged people
  • Assist people to take control of their health, develop healthy behaviours and make informed consumer decisions
  • Design, evaluate and promote products, such as foods and household appliances, or services for everyday living
  • Design and plan nutritious meals and assist people to prepare them.

Consider your role as an up and coming Home Economics Teacher.

My role as a Home Economics teacher is to facilitate authentic learning opportunities to think creatively, unique custom design, commence production and solve problems. Always offer support throughout both successes and failures - both lead to growth and further understanding.

What are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about sharing the knowledge I have gain through life experiences and personal research. I wish to share this knowledge to empower the students to make more informed choices, or open up an avenue of self exploration.

What will you bring to your students?

I bring life experience to my classroom.

* Understanding * Compassion * Patience * Resilience * Creativity *

With experience in hospitality, customer service, early years learning, dental nursing, I can advocate the home economics principles and applications. I have a love of food and textile technologies, preventative health strategies, mental health strategies, and creative exploration.

I also have the experience of failure, personally and professionally. I did not let things stop me. I stopped and took the time to, reflect, analyse, ask for help, and then I put one foot in front of the other with renewed vigour and moved on.

What is Human-Centred Design

"Embracing human-centered design means believing that all problems, even the seemingly intractable ones like poverty, gender equality, and clean water, are solvable. Moreover, it means believing that the people who face those problems every day are the ones who hold the key to their answer. Human-centered design offers problem solvers of any stripe a chance to design with communities, to deeply understand the people they’re looking to serve, to dream up scores of ideas, and to create innovative new solutions rooted in people’s actual needs." (IDEO.org, 2015)

How can I bring Human-Centred Design into the classroom?

Human-centred design can be incorporated through both the introductory and inspirational phases of the design brief.  An introductory video could start the students thinking about issues within their school or homes. Peer collaboration groups work could explore additional national or global topics. An open design brief could have the students explore a special interest to them which they could share with the classroom to educate and share possible solutions to solve their chosen issue.
