Week 6: Working in a Creative and Diverse Environment

Creativity within a classroom

The current curriculum is centred around rote learning and recanting facts to pass standardised testing. This type of learning gets them ready for university, but not for life. Creative thinking can only be embraced with minimal structure so students can interpret the instructions their way and problem solve. By students interpreting instructions, they will investigate topics that interest them and elaborate on this with their own unique perspective. The classroom outcome would result in a diverse range of ideas specialised to the individual.

Provenzano (2015) from edutopia.com highlights 3 favourite strategies to foster creativity in the classroom.
  1. Open-ended projects: Issue a design, with minimal constraints and loose instructions. Allow the student to investigate and pursue their interest within the issued  instructions. Then to present their ideas, allow the student access to a variety of platforms and apps along with writing materials so they can express the learning that best suits them.
  2. Genius Hour / 20 Time Allowing 1 hour a day or week to investigate something that they are passionate about, which would be ideal in a primary school setting. In the Home Economics classroom, I would cultivate brain storming activities so they can express their interests and I can create activities around this to improve engagement.
  3. Creative Team Building a classroom should be a collaborative environment encouraging interpersonal skills and communication skills. Together students can learn to problem solve.
