Week 7: Fashion History & Fabric Characteristics
Research a DecadeThe 1920s
World War I finished in 1918, but the effects were still impacting society, culture and fashion. The 1920s saw a move towards simplicity and comfort with the progressive lighter or natural effects, utilising economical fabrics. Corsets were still worn, but they were no longer as tight.
“la garçonne” look or the "flapper" populated most of the 1920s with its tubular look, dropped waist and raised knee-length hemline. This style was about simple lines, androgynous/curveless shapes and prodominately sleeveless. The simplicity of this style meant that the average woman could recreate this style at home with less expensive materials, creating the term "democratisation of fashion"
Waists and hemlines did go up and down throughout the 1920s mainly for day wear, whilst evening hemlines still predominantly touched the floor.
Daywear was simply decorated, whilst evening wear was elaborately decorated. Evening wear was adorned with beads, sequins, embroidery, silk and rhinestones.
Major Influences
Women who played tennis inspired the fashion of the 1920s. Famous tennis star, Suzanne Lenglen wore a short-sleeved and pleated dress with a headband called a "bandeau". Women began to wear sports attire to luncheons and up until the cocktail hour.

Edward Prince of Wales was also thought of as a fashion icon. With a reputation as a playboy, he attended parties with a great fashion sense. Many men aspired to replicate his look. He wore morning suits, and tuxedos but was a huge fan of the Plus-Fours, (short-legged trousers) matched with a sweater.
The newly created film industry in Hollywood and the African-American Jazz scene in Halem also contributed to the roaring twenties fashion scene.

1920s is ironically said to born out of the "glitzy, speakeasy nightlife" where dresses were made to move and shimmer. The fall/Winter 2022 runaway designs reflected this style.
