Bleaching Effect

For my Dilly Bag, I chose to do a bleaching effect on my bag. I relocated the pockets down from the original position on the jeans and chose to do an ATSI-inspired design.

Inspired by my recently purchased earrings I created a stencil from a recycled microwave meal container, marker and scissors.


Creating a stencil

Using a permanent marker I drew the Sisters Picking Wild Flower design onto a recycled microwave meal container. With scissors, I cut out the positive template. The plastic container is thick and craft scissors may be difficult to get through. Fold over the stencil and make an incision first. Open up fold and insert scissors into plastic and follow the lines.

Creating the Bleaching Effect

In a spray bottle put bleach in with double the water. Use gloves and safety glasses. Place the stencil on top on top of jeans pockets, and spray.

Unfortunately, bleaching didn't work possibly because denim was heavily bleached already or I over-diluted the bleach.

AT3: Flower Embellishment

  FLower EMbellishments Inspiration for these flowers was from a google search. Shabby Chic denim flowers. Link Design Sketch Creating the flowers   I freehand designed a flower with 5 sides. Utilising multiple coloured offcuts of material I cut out and layered flowers. I did a small gather stitch underneath the flower to try and create a crimped effect so the material would sit up. To secure the flowers I sewed the layers together and created a stamen with a sequin and bead. Denim jeans is a heavy material, so hand-sewing the flowers on will be difficult. A thimble maybe required to push through the needle. End design for flower embellishments I decided to follow the line of the jean's seam instead of the original staggered look design.

AT3: Success Criteria

 Success Criteria Use Denim Jeans - I have found a nice 97cm waist men's jeans with a nice front design on the legs. Recycle for resale  - Jeans have been repurposed into a Dilly Bag for storage and carrying items. Must have machine-sewn seams  - Dilly bag was constructed with machine-sewn seams Must contain a fastener  - I recycled old material to create drawstring ties that doubled as a handle. Must have both straight and decorative stitching  - I utilised the machine for both straight stitchings to construct the daily bag. I found a nice star/daisy stitch on the sewing machine and accented the bag at both the top and bottom of the bag. Must have 2 embellishments of choice  - I created fabric flowers and did some hand-embroidered flowers. Sustainability  - The only item purchased was the jeans for $3 at the local op shop.
